The next day I took the 240 to a nearby parking lot and took a few pictures. Here the extent of the rust starts to become apparent. You can also see that there was side molding removed from the doors. While other areas on the car seemed to look pretty good, like the spare tire well and most of the upper part of the car.

And while there is a great deal of rust on this car, and the more I would dig the more I found, what looked to be rust on the kicker panel of both sides of the car was really just the paint not sticking properly. It looked like they covered the kicker panels in a textured undercoating of some sort and it affected the top coat negatively.

1). Where it all began

I had always dreamt of owning a z car and at one time had even began saving toward the purchase of a 370z. That dream was dashed when my then daily driver became too problematic to keep, so I spent my 370’s savings on its replacement, a 2003 Audi A4.

Fast forward a few years to May 2014. The company I was working for at the time underwent a impromptu restructure which had me turning in my company car. This left me scrambling for transportation, anything really, as I previously depended on the company car since my girlfriend at the time drove the Audi.

Just for the heck of it, I searched for a Datsun on Craigslist and immediately found a beautiful white 240z. I called up a mechanic friend and went to see it that same day.

Which, in hindsight probably wasn’t necessary because I pretty much had my mind set on buying the car regardless of what my friend had said. Thanks anyway Omar.

We showed up, I took it for a spin and bought it all within about a half hour. The guy I bought it from said he needed to sell it quickly because work had him moving to California. He even had another 240 in better condition which he claimed had already been sold.

My buddy followed me the 20 miles or so home while I drove the z, and the car ran great. I was aware of some of the rust and cosmetic issues, but had convinced myself it wasn’t that bad.
